In the pursuit of effective treatments for Alzheimer’s disease that minimize side effects, researchers have turned their attention to the humble hibiscus flower and its component, Gossypetin. This phytochemical compound, also known as Hibiscus Sabdariffa or Roselle, has demonstrated remarkable potential in fighting Alzheimer’s without adverse reactions. Gossypetin, found abundantly in hibiscus, boasts potent antibacterial properties and has recently shown promise in activating radioprotective mechanisms within the body. The key lies in its ability to facilitate the clearance of beta-amyloid, a hallmark of Alzheimer’s pathology, by enhancing microglial phagocytic activity against Aβ aggregates. Research led by Professor Kyong-Tai Kim has shed light on Gossypetin’s multifaceted role in combating Alzheimer’s. By inhibiting the release of genes associated with gliosis and promoting the expression of genes involved in Aβ phagocytosis, Gossypetin aids in the removal of Aβ deposits from the b
